Traffic was at a standstill on Auckland's Southern Motorway as police dealt with a driver who fled a crash near an overbridge, although all lanes are now open again.
The Transport Agency urged people to avoid the motorway after Greenlane as all southbound lanes were closed at about 6pm.
NZTA said the road was now open again, although there was still significant congestion in the area.
Police said there was a crash between a car and a truck near the Mountain Road overbridge and while officers were talking to one of the drivers he ran away.
As a safety precaution the police closed all south-bound lanes from Ellerslie.
The man was taken into custody shortly before 7pm.
