A review into a multi-sport facility planned for Christchurch is causing exasperation amongst the sporting community.

The review is looking at whether the Metro Sport Facility planned for next to Hagley Park should be combined with a multi-event arena also planned for the city.

The facility won't be up until at least 2021, and it's already two years late.

Recreation Association chief executive Andrew Leslie told Sunday Morning the facilities shouldn't be combined.

"In its essence the metro facility is there for community outcomes and the multi-use arena is there for entertainment outcomes.

"So two completely different venues with completely different functions and purposes, if you try and put those together it just doesn't work."

The results of the review are due back at the end of the month.
