State Highway 11 between Kawakawa and Paihia will re-open to traffic twice a day - starting next week.
The popular tourist route to the Bay of Islands has been closed since mid-February by a huge slip on Lemons Hill.
The Transport Agency said from Monday, the road would reopen each day between 7.30 and 8.30am, and again between 4.30 and 6pm.
Crews are working from the top of the hill down, cutting five-metre benches in the face of the hill, to stabilise it and clearing the debris from the bottom.
The agency said the partial re-opening had to be limited to daylight hours, so spotters standing on the hillside could monitor for any slip movement.
The re-openings would be weather dependent and people would need to arrive early at the control points, on either side of the slip to ensure they get through.
