Police investigating life-threatening injuries to a baby in South Auckland have charged a man with assaulting him and say more charges may follow.

Six-month old Cezar Taylor remains in a critical but stable condition at Starship Hospital in Auckland after being admitted on Friday.

Police say he has severe head injuries consistent with shaking and blunt force trauma.

The incident took place at the child's home in the suburb of Mangere East.

Officers looking for his mother's partner, James Allan Hemana, in relation to the attack found the 30-year-old at a house in Te Awamutu on Wednesday morning.

Mr Hemana was arrested on outstanding warrants for two unrelated charges and was due to appear in Te Awamutu District Court on Wednesday.

Police say Mr Hemana may face further charges in relation to the baby's injuries if his condition worsens.

Officers have also been interviewing three women from the house where Mr Hemana was found.

Detective Senior Sergeant Richard Wilkie said on Tuesday that Cezar sustained the injuries over a period of time. He did not know if the family was known to Child, Youth and Family.
