Police released the local man's name yesterday and said the homicide investigation into his death was continuing.
A second man, also in his 50s, had serious injuries and was transported to Whanganui Hospital.
The death of Mr Butler has shocked nearby residents.
Resident Kay Donald said there was a heavy police presence in the street at the time and it appeared two properties had been cordoned off.
Ms Donald says it was a quiet neighbourhood, and the report of a death had shaken residents.
"As far as I know nothing has ever happened around this road," she said.
"It's been a really good neighbourhood. I've lived here for years."
Police extended their sympathies to Mr Butler's friends and family, they said in a statement.
