Wind and potentially heavy rain over the weekend is set to blow away the settled conditions throughout the country, MetService says, but exactly how it will play out is so far uncertain.

MetService meteorologist Tom Adams said a front was expected to hit New Zealand bringing rain and wind to much of the country, and particularly the North Island.

He said the Far North would bear the brunt of heavy winds and persistent rain.

"This low is yet to form, so there is still a range of scenarios that could take.

"We will be issuing watches and warnings tomorrow, when the situation becomes more apparent but it just needs to be reiterated there's a lot of uncertainty with this system.

"The most important thing is to check the forecasting tomorrow when we have these warnings and watches out pay attention to them, and check NZTA for the conditions of the roads.

"It could make or break your return from the school holidays.

Mr Adams said the front was expected to persist into next week for many areas.

He said the South Island's West Coast was likely to have the best weather this weekend.
