A police officer was hit and thrown into the air when he tried to stop a stolen car with four teenagers in Auckland last night.
The police chase started at around 3am this morning after the car fled from officers on the Southern Motorway.
At one stage it was travelling in the wrong direction on the motorway.
The fleeing driver drove straight at the officer when he was trying to put out road spikes, police said.
He suffered minor injuries.
Police said one of the passengers then tried to steal a van, assaulting the driver, before he was tasered and arrested.
The three other people in the stolen car continued on the motorway before it was spiked.
The four aged between 13 and 18 face a number of charges.
The police described their behaviour as appalling, reckless and dangerous.
