A teenager has been arrested over what police describe as a "violent assault" at an Auckland train station.

Police said the victim was attacked while waiting for a train at the Ōnehunga Station on 19 May and his wallet, phone and bag were stolen.

Detective Senior Sergeant Scott Armstrong said he received serious head injuries and was being supported by police and the local South American community.

"This arrest is a good example of what can be achieved with assistance from the public. This was a traumatic event for our victim and we would like to thank the community," Mr Armstrong said.

The 17 year old is to appear in the Auckland District Court today.
