Police were attending an unrelated incident at the Mann Street Campground about 11.30pm, when the officer noticed a man acting suspiciously outside a cabin.

The man fled after being approached by police and as he climbed a fence, the officer grabbed his arm dislodging a knife from his grip.

The man got away and the officer noticed the large cuts after returning to his patrol car.

Otago Lakes area commander Inspector Olaf Jensen said this is a serious incident and he's asking anyone with information to come forward.

The man is described as 170-180 centimetres tall and wearing a dark beanie, a dark long-sleeved hoodie and dark pants.
