Heavy rainfall forecast from tomorrow morning is expected to disrupt travel between Christchurch and Picton.

Motorists planning to use State Highway 1 between Christchurch and Picton should rethink their plans as there would likely be delays, the Transport Agency said.

Rain is forecast across the Kaikōura Coast from early tomorrow morning through to Wednesday.

The Agency said it was likely the road would be closed overnight on Tuesday due to the increased likelihood of rock fall.

The road was expected to reopen on Wednesday following inspections.

Road users are advised to stay up to date on the weather or use the alternate route via the Lewis Pass.

Heavy weather with up to 220mm of rain was also expected to hit the East Coast, which was ravaged by a storm a week ago.

The heavy rain and wind caused about 1,000,000 tonnes of logging debris to be scattered across properties, roads and down to the harbour, and prompted evacuations including three people airlifted from their roof.
