A witness called the police to the home after noticing a disturbance on Monday afternoon, and officers arrested two women who were seen close to the property.

The elderly victims were taken to hospital after the assault, but police said they were not seriously injured.

A 39-year-old woman has been charged with aggravated robbery and two charges of aggravated assault, and a 38-year-old woman has been charged with aggravated robbery.

They have been remanded in custody before their scheduled appearance in Christchurch District Court on 27 August.

Detective Senior Sergeant Greg Cottam said an attack on elderly, vulnerable members of the community would not be tolerated.

"Everyone has a right to feel safe and be safe in their home and community," Mr Cottam said.

"In instances such as this where innocent victims are attacked we will work tirelessly to hold those responsible to account."

Mr Cottam praised the witness for calling the police and helping keep their community safe.
