Two New Zealanders have been killed in a head-on collision in the American state of Idaho.

The van crossed the centre line and collided with a truck and trailer shortly before 7am on Friday morning local time.

State police said the couple, who were both aged 63, died of their injuries at the scene in south-eastern Idaho, near the border with Wyoming.

The truck driver, Michael Garvin, was not injured.

A spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade said they were "providing consular assistance to the family of a New Zealand couple killed in a traffic accident in the United States".
