A longtime human rights advocate and law professor has been appointed as the Chief Human Rights Commissioner.

Paul Hunt has previously worked as a special rapporteur at the United Nations, and joins the commission from the University of Essex in England.

He replaces David Rutherford.

An adviser at Oranga Tamariki Saunoamaali'i Karanina Sumeo has been appointed as Equal Employment Opportunities Commissioner, replacing Jackie Blue.

Minister of Justice Andrew Little said he was excited to work alongside Mr Hunt and Dr Sumeo to tackle the country's most pressing problems.

Both bring a wealth of knowledge about improving human rights nationally and overseas, he said.
