The police were called to State Highway 6, near the Devils Staircase, just before eight this morning.

Details about the cause of the crash remain unclear, but the driver of the car has died.

In a statement, Southern Discoveries spokesperson Bryony Dalby-Ball said the cause was still unclear, but the driver of the bus and 14 passengers were okay.

"We are currently taking all of the passengers back to their accommodation in Queenstown and providing them, as well as our staff, with any support they may require."

Passengers on board the bus are being interviewed about what they saw on the popular stretch of road.

Acting Sergeant Terry Wood said it appeared the car that collided with the bus was over the centre line.

"The bus has ended up - due to size - more or less on top of the car... traumatic thing for [the bus passengers] to watch, but no injuries to them."

Mr Wood said weather conditions were okay.

"At the time, traffic would have been a little bit of commuter traffic coming and going."

Mr Wood said they were yet to identify the victim.

The Serious Crash Unit is investigating.

State Highway 6 has now reopened.
