A climber was critically injured in a fall from a mountain near Arthur's Pass today.

The man had been climbing on Mt Harper with six others when he fell and was badly hurt, police said.

Rescue Coordination Centre NZ spokesperson Mark Dittmer said emergency services were notified when the man's climbing partners activated a personal locator beacon shortly after midday.

A rescue helicopter was sent from Greymouth and due to the seriousness of the climber's injuries a second helicopter was dispatched from Christchurch.

The man was taken to Christchurch Hospital in a critical condition.
