A person is dead after their car went over a steep bank in the Port Hills near Christchurch.
The crash was reported to police at 10am today.
The serious crash unit is investigating and motorists are asked to avoid the scene on Dyers Pass Road near the Sign of the Kiwi.
The body has been recovered and the matter referred to the coroner.
Police say nobody else was involved.
