The New Zealand Transport Agency says it has no legal powers to force motorists who may have dodgy warrants of fitness to recheck their vehicles.

warnings of faulty tests].
Transport Agency managing partner Steve Haszard said owners should get their vehicles rechecked because the cost would be met by the agency.
He said they had been reaching out to motorists by writing to them and via social media campaigns to let people know that it was in their interest.
"All we can do is continue to strongly encourage by way of writing to people, social media campaigns and interviews like this to let people know that it's in their interest - and every other road user's interest - for those cars to go in and get rechecked."
Mr Haszard said it was a driver's responsibility to make sure their vehicle was up to standard.
However, just more than 4000 vehicles had been reinspected by 9 January, with 60 percent failing their first reinspection.
