Corporal Pang Wei Chong, also known as Aloysius Pang, is now in a critical condition after additional surgery was carried out last night in Waikato Hospital.

Mr Pang was injured while carrying out repair work on a self-propelled Howitzer weapon.

Singapore's Defence Ministry says the chief of trauma and acute care surgery at Singapore's Tan Tock Seng Hospital, Dr Teo Li Tserng, is working with the Waikato Hospital medical team to provide the best care for Corporal Pang.

The Singapore Armed Forces are providing support to Mr Pang's family, who are with him.

Earlier, a New Zealand Defence Force spokesperson confirmed the injury happened during Exercise Thunder Warrior - a live-firing exercise it hosts each year but does not participate in.

Mr Pang is an actor who has starred in a number of Singaporean films and television series, and is also serving in the defence force as a reservist.
