The Defence Force is joining the search for a 60-year-old man missing in the ranges between Wellington and Palmerston North.

An Air Force helicopter is joining search and rescue personnel in the Tararua Range this afternoon after a request from the police.
The man left a four day tramp at the end of January and was due back three days ago.
Search teams have been checking tracks and huts since Tuesday morning.
