The two-truck crash about 3.55pm left the highway completely blocked. One driver had critical injuries and was trapped in their vehicle.

About 10pm, police said the driver had died. They said the road was likely to remain closed overnight.

The other driver was taken to Waikato hospital in a moderate condition, police said.

A detour was in place, adding about 20 minutes to travel time.

Meanwhile in Kinleith - less than 10km south - a truck rolled at 4.13pm.

Police said this second crash, involving one tanker truck, caused a diesel spill.

They said the power was out in the area and urged motorists to avoid the area or expect delays.
