Meat works fate to be announced

6:27 am on 22 July 2008

The fate of another sheep meat works operated by Silver Fern Farms, formerly known as PPCS, will be announced on Tuesday.

Employees at the Silver Fern Farms Canterbury, in the suburb of Belfast, in Christchurch, have been called to a meeting at 10.30am.

The Meatworkers Union expects to be briefed at 8am.

The plant processes lamb, mutton and veal. It employs 445 people and is one of two the company operates in Belfast. The other processes beef.

Last week, Silver Fern Farms sold its Silverstream lamb plant near Mosgiel with the loss of up to 100 full time and seasonal jobs.

It has also closed a sheep plant, two deer processing plants and a lamb skin business as part of a restructuring programme known as "right-sizing".
