Police are searching for a Northland man after a stabbing overnight between Friday and Saturday.

A man, 19, was stabbed in his stomach and tongue after finding a group of men going through property in his lounge in Kaikohe.

Police are looking for Raman Pouwhare, 27, whom they say is a short Maori man with a moustache and heavy tattooing on his upper body.

He's considered dangerous and should not be approached. But the police want to hear from anyone who may know where he is.

The stabbing victim has had surgery in Whangarei Hospital and is in a serious but stable condition.
