An 18-year-old has been arrested on a firearms charge following the accidental shooting of a teenager in the Hamilton suburb of Chartwell.

The Hamilton teenager injured in the shooting is in a serious but stable condition in Waikato Hospital's intensive care unit.

Ambulance services called to Chartwell on Tuesday morning found a 16-year-old boy with extensive facial injuries.

Police say it appears a teenage boy was showing a gun he had found nearby Porritt Stadium to three friends in the basement of a house when it went off, hitting the victim.

Police are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident. The accused will appear in the Hamilton District Court next Monday.
