One of New Zealand's worst maritime tragedies has been commemorated.
A plaque was unveiled at a hall on Wellington's south coast on Thursday, 100 years to the day since passenger ferry the SS Penguin was shipwrecked off Cape Terawhiti in Cook Strait.
About 50 people, including relatives of the 72 people who died, attended the ceremony at Makara Community Hall.
The plaque, unveiled by Wellington Mayor Kerry Prendergast, is to be mounted on a large rock at Tongue Point.
Ken Scadden, of the Maritime Archeological Association, says an attempt may yet be made to find exaclty where the Penguin lies in Cook Straight.
