Picton residents oppose toxic chemical

6:04 am on 15 February 2009

A group of Picton environmentalists have staged a small demonstration to oppose plans to fumigate a shipment of export logs with the toxic chemical, methyl bromide.

The Soil and Health Association held the gathering at a lookout above Picton Port on Saturday morning, as logs were being loaded onto a ship travelling to India.

Spokesperson Steffan Browning says about 20 members from the community and the Green Party turned up to discuss the effects of using methyl bromide.

Mr Browning says the logging company Zindia has agreed the planned application of methyl bromide will be a one-off event.
