A man is in a critical condition in hospital after being struck by a taxi in Napier, and police want to speak to three other men about the incident.

The man, 34, is in Hawke's Bay Hospital after an incident in Napier at about 1.30am on Sunday.

Police say a taxi, with two paying customers onboard, struck the man who may have been involved in an altercation on the footpath, just before being hit.

Police want to speak to three other men who were seen with the injured man earlier.

Detective Emmet Lynch says the taxi did not intentionally strike the man and police are investigating how and when his injuries occurred.
