Eight arrests at Whangarei party

Police in Whangarei are blaming mass text messaging and social networking sites for the area's latest out-of-control parties.

Eight people were arrested for disorderly behaviour early on Sunday morning at a party attended by about 200 people in Kamo.

Sergeant Neil Pennington says fights began spilling out on to the street when the host tried to shut down the party, and bottles were thrown at police.

He says some parties are intended to be just small gatherings but text messaging and Internet sites like Bebo can attract large numbers of uninvited people so the party gets out of control quickly.

Mr Pennington says police had to attend another party two weeks ago that drew 200 people because of mass text messaging.
