A damaged jet ski washed ashore near Peka Peka on the Kapiti coast sparked a police and Coastguard search for its rider.
However, it was called off when police discovered the Wanganui man became separated from the jet ski last Tuesday, but did not report the incident.
Central Districts police spokesperson Kim Perks says boats patrolled the coast and a spotter plane flew over the area between the Waikanae River and Foxton, searching for any sign of the rider.
