Concerns mount over Kaitaia civic centre, says mayor

Far North mayor Wayne Brown says there is growing unease in the community about a $15 million civic and cultural centre planned for Kaitaia.

The Te Ahu Trust, set up by the previous council, has spent more than $900,000 on design work for the new building.

The Far North District Council has asked the Audit Office to review the Te Ahu project, saying it is concerned at the spending to date and community dissent over the design.

Mr Brown says the council has money set aside for the centre, but this might be a good time to reconsider that.

The chief executive of the Te Rarawa runanga, Kevin Robinson, says the last time Kaitaia had any money spent on its civic centre was 1975.

He says Te Rarawa people support the project so much that they have agreed to give the community the land for it.
