Mayor pleased at change of plan over 1080 drop

Westland District Council is pleased the Animal Health Board will abandon plans for an aerial drop of 1080 poison near Hokitika.

Instead the board will hand-place the pellets by hand, following concerns about potential impact on drinking water.

Westland Mayor Maureen Pugh says it's unusual for a council to oppose a 1080 drop. She sees the decision not to go ahead as a "common sense compromise".

Ms Pugh says it may set a precedent for other planned aerial 1080 drops.
