Holidaymakers warned of sewage spill in Waipu River

9:00 pm on 9 April 2009

Holidaymakers heading for Waipu in Northland over Easter are being warned to steer clear of part of the beach after a sewage spill.

The Whangarei District Council says a pipe broke, causing the leak.

The council says the break was spotted by a contractor and fixed and the amount of sewage that went into the Waipu River was not large.

However, it is warning camping ground operators and is putting up signs telling people not to swim at the Waipu Cove end of the estuary, or gather shellfish there, over Easter.
