A teenager has had her leg amputated below the knee after being run over during an illegal street race in Auckland.
She was hit while in the North Shore suburb of Bayview early on Friday.
Senior Sergeant Mark Fergus says two cars were seen racing around suburban streets shortly before the crash occurred at the end of Manuka Road.
The 17-year-old from Beach Haven was at a carpark at the end of the road when one of the cars sped down the road, lost control, and hit her.
Police spoke to the driver at the scene and charges will be considered once the investigation is complete.
Police are asking for witnesses to come forward.
