A car loaded with chemicals used to manufacture the drug methamphetamine has been discovered at a breath-testing checkpoint in Lower Hutt, near Wellington, police say.

The car was stopped just after 8am on Sunday during routine breath-testing of motorists on Hutt Road.

Police say a search of the vehicle, which had been reported stolen, revealed it was carrying significant quantities of chemicals and other equipment that could be used to manufacture methamphetamine, or P, a class-A drug.

The driver of the car is due to appear in Lower Hutt District Court on Monday charged with drug offences.
