Hamilton principal on leave during investigation

4:39 pm on 21 May 2009

Police in Hamilton are investigating financial accusations against a high school principal.

Martin Elliott from Fraser High School has taken leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

It is understood the police inquiry relates to school money being spent on private work.

School board chair Paul Willard says the inquiry was initated by police and was not the result of a formal complaint by the board.

He says Mr Elliott's decison to take leave is in his best interest and that of the school.

Mr Willard says Mr Elliott has told the board he will vigorously defend the allegations.

Late last year, the board investigated an accusation from a member of the public, which resulted in an employment issue with the principal.

Mr Willard says Mr Elliot has not been suspended.

Police refuse to comment on the investigation.
