New security cameras for Christchurch

New state-of-the-art cameras are operating in Christchurch as part of a police and council attempt to make the South Island city safer.

Christchurch City Council paid nearly $1 million for the 25 closed circuit cameras.

The cameras will operate 24 hours a day and will be monitored by police and volunteers.

Mayor Bob Parker says statistics show Christchurch is one of the safest cities in New Zealand, but residents do not feel very safe.

Mr Parker says he hopes the cameras will help boost the public's perception of safety as well as helping police to fight crime.
