Drop in Newmarket thefts attributed to security cameras

Police in the Auckland suburb of Newmarket are attributing a 22% drop in thefts to 14 security cameras which were installed a year ago.

Senior Sergeant Wendy Spiller says CCTV is helping to allay public concern about crime, and the number of robberies from people, shops and cars has plummeted.

The Newmarket Business Association has hailed the success, and says things will improve further when the number of cameras is increased to 20 in July.
