More use of Maori land to grow food urged

The Maori organic growers association is holding a hui in Ahipara this weekend with the message that Maori land should be used to grow Maori kai.

Te Waka Kai Ora national co-ordinator Pounamu Skelton says there's still a lot of Maori land which is not used, and which could be the basis for small food businesses.

She told Waatea News that interest in growing is increasing, as people look at ways to feed their large families, as well as service hapu and marae.

An international brand and standard for growing kai Maori are on the agenda.
