Small turnout for Auckland motorway protest

8:59 pm on 6 June 2009

Only about 100 people gathered on Saturday to protest against the planned Waterview connection motorway, which will complete Auckland's western ring route.

The 4.5km stretch of highway is to pass through Mt Albert and Waterview and threatens 365 homes.

A two-hour protest march along the planned highway routes began at 11.30am, attended by those who supported an earlier proposal for twin tunnels, rather than an above-ground motorway.

Margi Watson from the lobby group Tunnel Or Nothing, which planned the protest, says she's not disappointed with the small turnout.

She says the group only had two weeks to organise the march, in order to hold it before the Mt Albert by-election next Saturday.
