More patients and staff at Waikato Hospital have developed symptoms of norovirus, taking to 20 the number of people affected.

By Friday, 14 patients and six staff had contracted the highly infectious virus, which produces symptoms including nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and muscle aches.

Staff in Ward 5, a general ward, have been asked to wear masks, aprons and gloves and strict procedures have been set up to ensure hygiene and cleanliness are maintained.

Infection Control clinical nurse manager Vicki Parry says the hospital is already experiencing high occupancy rates and is recommending people see either their GP or the emergency department for assessment.
