The cost of a fire at a West Auckland boatyard on Sunday morning may exceed $1 million.
The fire began in a shed and spread quickly across the yard, destroying most of the property, including four boats. It took 40 firefighters to control the blaze.
Henderson senior station officer Shaun Pilgrim says a business at the yard was involved in cleaning diesel tanks, making the large amount of fuel at the site a recipe for disaster.
The boats destroyed include the old Kawau ferry Tawa Two, which was undergoing restoration.
One officer was taken to Waitakere Hospital with suspected back injuries after one of the boats rolled on him.
The Fire Service, which began a scene examination on Monday, says the blaze is not suspicious, but the cause may never be known.
