The 20-year-old man whose body was found in the Otago Harbour on Friday morning has been identified as Regan John McCormack, a student at the University of Otago.

The Dunedin police say it appears that Mr McCormack had left a friend's 21st birthday party the night before and was walking home when he became disoriented and fell into the Steamer Basin area of the harbour.

The body was recovered by divers on Friday afternoon and the coroner has been notified.

The police say that there don't appear to be any suspicious circumstances about the death at this stage but they remain interested in talking to anyone who saw Mr McCormack walking from the area of Frederick St and Anzac Ave Wharf in the early hours of Friday.
