Rent rise may force trotting club off reserve

The Greymouth Trotting Club may be forced to leave its racecourse because of a big rent increase.

The club has been racing at the Victoria Park racecourse since the late 1800s.

The course is on a Maori reserve owned by Mawhera Incorporation and the club's leases have recently come up for renewal.

Club president John Wood says what used to be a fee of $15,000 per year has risen to $50,000 per year.

He says a subcommittee is meeting with Mawhera to work out an arrangement that will keep them on the land.
