Woman dragged from burning flat in Lyttelton

11:29 am on 21 August 2009

A woman has been critically injured in a fire in Lyttelton, near Christchurch.

Firefighters rescued the woman, believed to be in her 40s, from a flat above a cafe in London Street.

Several neighbours called emergency services from about 12.30am on Friday. Three fire crews attended the blaze.

Lyttelton's chief fire officer Mark Buckley says the fire was isolated to the flat, but there is extensive heat and smoke damage to the property.

A smoke alarm was found at the flat but is not thought to have been working.
