Memories of Te Maori exhibition

8:57 am on 3 September 2009

Childhood memories of the Te Maori exhibition have flavoured an exhibition opening at the Mangere Arts Centre on Thursday.

Curator Nigel Borell says Kawakawa told Waatea News that it's a tribute to the first international touring exhibition of taonga Maori, which opened at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York in September 1984.

When it returned to Aotearoa in 1986, it became the first point of contact for many tamariki Maori with traditional Maori artforms.

Kawakawa includes the work of 12 contemporary Maori artists, including Natalie Couch, Charlotte Graham, Hemi MacGregor and Saffron Te Ratana.
