Taranaki Regional Council says it is not aware that any site in the region is still contaminated with unsafe levels of toxic chemicals.
Council records obtained by Radio New Zealand under the Official Information Act show there are 1309 sites where there are known or potential soil contaminants in Taranaki.
The contaminants include acids, leaded petrol, herbicides and asbestos.
But the regional council says all the sites have been checked and the contamination is at safe levels.
Spokesperson Gary Bedford says the definition of such sites cannot strictly be described as contaminated under the Resource Management Act.
He says the 16 sites where unsafe levels of contamination were previously found have been cleaned up.
