Suspicious fire at Mt Smart Supertop

10:12 pm on 10 September 2009

A suspicious fire at one of New Zealand's premiere concert venues has been quickly dealt with by large turnout from the Fire Service.

The Supertop at Auckland's Mt Smart Stadium caught fire just after 6pm on Thursday.

Fourteen fire trucks and more than 60 fire fighters were called to the blaze in the large marquee often used for concerts.

Otahuhu Station Officer Angela Munro says crews had to cut a bolt on the fence to gain access to the site and the big turnout was due to a high level alert.

It took 10 minutes to put out the blaze, which consumed a corner of a stage. The building also sustained structural, smoke and water damage.

No one was inside when the fire took hold.

The Fire Service says the blaze is being treated as suspicious. Police also attended the scene on Thursday night.
