A performing arts centre for Nelson is a step closer, with the city council deciding to seek public submissions on a $32m proposal.

Numerous proposals have been considered over the past two decades, but the council now has a site in mind and a concept for a 1200-seat theatre and an adjacent conference centre.

Mayor Kerry Marshall says it has been 15 years since fire destroyed the Majestic Theatre, the city's only large concert hall and theatre, and Nelson is the only city of its size not to have such a facility.

A hearing will be held next month. Mr Marshall expects a final decision by Christmas.
