A light plane was forced to make an emergency landing in a paddock at the intersection of two rural roads in Franklin, south of Auckland.

Police say the lone pilot was trying to get to Ardmore Airport but had engine trouble and decided to land the plane in a paddock.

Police clarified earlier reports that the plane had landed on the road, saying it landed in a paddock at the intersection of Runciman and Tuhimata Road in the town of Paerata just before 3pm on Sunday.

Police say the pilot was not injured and there was light damage to the plane's propeller and landing gear.
