The numbering of state highways in Tauranga is about to be changed, preparatory to the opening of the city's second harbour bridge.
From the first weekend of December, the new harbour bridge between the city and Mount Maunganui will be crossed by SH2.
The highway is currently routed through suburban 15th Avenue towards Papamoa via SH2/29, which will cease to exist.
The Transport Agency's harbour link roading project around the second harbour bridge is due to be completed a week before Christmas.
Two lanes of traffic will head from Tauranga to the Mount on the new bridge and two lanes of traffic will travel in the opposite direction on the original bridge.
