The police have confirmed that a 30-year-old hang-glider pilot who crashed into the side of a cliff south of Auckland died at the scene.

They say the Civil Aviation Authority is investigating the accident, which happened in the Kariotahi beach area near Waiuku on Friday afternoon.

The authority is also investigating a glider crash near Blenheim in which the pilot died.

The experienced 55-year-old pilot left Omaka airfield south-west of Blenheim on Friday morning for what was meant to be a 12-hour solo round trip. A search was launched when he failed to return by 9.30pm.

The police say the wreckage of the aircraft was located at about 3am on Orchard Spur, about seven kilometres south of Blenheim.

The man's name will be released once his family has been notified.
